Helping Afghanistan
A MESSAGE FROM MOE SHALIZI
Thank you, Moe Shalizi, for using your platform to support Afghanistan. Thank YOU to everyone who shared and supported the campaign. Together, we raised over $560,000 within a few weeks.
AACO Community Projects Fund - $25,000*
These last few months affirmed that our diaspora is most committed to supporting Afghanistan and our recently arrived Afghan sisters and brothers. We are grateful to Moe Shalizi for funding the first-ever Community Projects Fund, allowing AACO to support initiatives led by members of our diaspora. Beginning in June 2022, we will provide seed funding to community members working to impact Afghanistan or resettlement efforts positively. We will share details on how to apply for these funds in the coming months.
Given the ongoing nature of this work, please let us know how else AACO could support you as you support the community. You can reach out to us at info@aa-co.org.
Recipient Organizations
Funds raised through this campaign will support resettlement efforts in the U.S. and humanitarian projects in Afghanistan. Below is a list of additional recipient organizations and a brief description of how they are using these funds. Over the next few months, we will continue to share more detailed updates from each of the recipient organizations.

These funds will support Doctors Without Borders in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare centers in five provinces throughout Afghanistan.

The IRC’s 25 offices throughout the US are assisting with the resettlement of the Afghan evacuees. The funds from AACO will be used to provide recent Afghan arrivals with housing support including assisting with deposits, rent payments, and

Afghan Refugee Relief helps our incoming Afghan refugees get resettled immediately in America. Funds from this campaign assisted with initial housing costs for over 100 families as well as furniture, food, and emergency cash for over 300 families. Remaining funds will be used to purchase a van to help with transportation when families need rides for important appointments or to their schools/jobs until they get vehicles of their own.

Afghan Literacy Foundation’s mission is to keep children in school and enrich their learning environment. Funds from this campaign were immediately distributed as relief aid to those in need and struggling staff in three schools in Kabul. Additional fundraising efforts supported students and their families to help pay for food and basic needs in this time of financial crisis.

Homaira Rahman Foundation (HRF) was established to help the orphans of Afghanistan. Funds will cover approximately five months of operating expenses, estimated at $4,200 per month (i.e., ingredients, raw materials, and employees’ wages) at the Iman Foundation Bakery located near Bagram in Barikab, Afghanistan. The bakery provides free naan (bread) daily to vulnerable men, women, and children facing starvation. The first bread distribution began on January 22, 2022 with a pilot so the team on the ground could evaluate the feasibility of the project and measure the general satisfaction and overall well-being of the families to maximize impact. Originally, we started with 900 naan for 100 needy families at a rate of approx. $140 per day/$4200 per month; after the assessment 1200 fresh naan are being made daily for 130 households across 5 villages. We are currently on our 4th month of operations, which is managed by The Children of War.

The International Orphan Care (IOC) provides the orphans, impoverished children, and individuals experiencing disability in Afghanistan with HOPE (Help Orphans be Productive and Educated). PROJECT HOPE reaches orphaned children (ages 5 to 13 years) and teenagers (ages 13 years and older) in Afghanistan; providing them with elementary education, clothing, hygiene and supplies. Those 13-years and older receive vocational skill training to help with future employment, as well as providing skills for mentoring their younger siblings. IOC provides these children the means to go to school so they can spend their days learning and playing with children instead of working, begging on the streets or turning to other desperate sources for survival. Funds from this campaign supported recent graduation tools and expenses for students that had successfully completed a vocational class.

Children of War continues to serve a critical need for education and training in Afghanistan. While conditions on the ground continue to deteriorate, Children of War has expanded operations to serve more children and vulnerable people than ever. The Children of War team in Afghanistan works tirelessly at these difficult times to provide food packages to many provinces in Afghanistan. With these funds, Children of War distributed food packages to 100 families in need in Afghanistan.

Raqim Foundation is mindful of the deepening economic and humanitarian crisis that has engulfed Afghanistan, and wanted to assist locally in ways that both address need and ultimately promote self-reliance and self-sufficiency. These funds were used to cover the operating expenses of three recently established sewing classes for rural women: one in Parwan province, one in Badakhshan province, and one in Kalakan (Kabul province). This project will hopefully accomplish stated objectives and provide people with income-generating skills that can be used to start a micro enterprise. Each sewing class is a 6--month certificate program for 10 students. The monthly cost is approximately $680 for each class, which includes the cost of the sewing equipment/supplies, teacher's salary, and rent (small room) - so the donated funds ($5,000) will fully finance almost 3 months for the 3 classes.
**In addition to the amount received for the Community Projects Fund, approximately 3% of the total funds raised will cover AACO’s administrative costs.
