Afghan-American Conference Comprehensive (AAC) Survey Results

In collaboration with Nura A. Sediqe, Ph.D., this research report presents in-depth findings from surveys conducted with AACO participants. The data reveals powerful insights: conference attendance significantly boosts participants' sense of belonging, identity, social networks, community perception, and political efficacy. These findings affirm the transformative potential of our work and its enduring impact on our community.

At AACO, we are committed to advocating for the rights of Afghan immigrants and refugees, particularly during these uncertain times.

In a recent conversation with Emily McCabe of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Commission on Immigration, Spojmie Nasiri, AACO Board member and immigration attorney, shed light on the current immigration landscape for Afghans. Together, they discussed the ongoing challenges and complexities of immigration policies, aiming to combat misinformation and provide clarity on how these changes affect our community.

Additionally, AACO, in collaboration with The 5ive Pillars and MCC East Bay, hosted an informational session led by immigration attorney and AACO Board member Spojmie Nasiri. This event, focused on the evolving immigration policies under the Trump Administration and provided invaluable resources and support for Afghan refugees.

Through initiatives like aiding earthquake recovery in Afghanistan and funding urgent medical relief in Gaza, AACO remains steadfast in its commitment to humanitarian support. In the U.S., AACO provides educational scholarships, laptops for Afghan newcomers, and hosts the Afghan-American Conference—a vital space for community engagement, advocacy, and unity. “I couldn’t do anything for her. We didn’t have the equipment.” – Dr. Ali Aziz-Sultan, AACO Board Chair and neurosurgeon, shared this heartbreaking story of a 7-year-old girl suffering from Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida during a trip to Afghanistan. She was a child he couldn’t save because the necessary equipment simply wasn’t there. This year, we’re partnering with @neurokids50 to change stories like hers. Together, we’ll provide training and equipment to treat over 200 children suffering from these life-threatening conditions. As we approach #GivingTuesday, we want to highlight our ongoing humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan and the critical need for your support. In 2023, we worked with Uplift Afghanistan to rebuild homes in Herat for families impacted by devastating earthquakes. “We were there from day one, and we continue to be there.” Spojmie Nasiri, a nationally recognized immigration attorney and AACO Board Member, highlights how AACO has been on the frontlines of advocating for Afghans since the US withdrawal and mass evacuation in 2021. From day one, AACO has worked tirelessly to support Afghan refugees both here in the US and abroad. We’ve been advocating for better conditions for Afghans resettling in the US and collaborating with partners to develop safe pathways for those still seeking refuge. From pushing for the Afghan Adjustment Act and Temporary Protected Status to supporting the approval of humanitarian parole petitions, we’ve been fighting at all levels of government for Afghan families in need. This year, our legal services expanded to serve over 120 clients through education and outreach—but the need is growing, and so must our efforts. For Sumaya, it was a chance to share her story, lead powerful discussions on discrimination, and "𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳."
